Different type of whippings include:

Common Whipping
Can be made anywhere on a length of rope. Normally used to secure an eye splice or to protect the bitter end of a rope from chafe.

Sail Maker's Whipping
Used to protect the end of a rope (usually natural fibre) from chafe. Can only be used on stranded rope.
